Lagos is the capita of Nigeria and contains 14,368,000 million people, which is a 3.34%

increase since 2018. The city lies around the Lagos lagoon on the edge of the Gulf of Guinea. The city of Lagos is broken up into 16 Local Government Areas. Victoria island is the financial center of the city with 51 neighborhoods, both formal and informal, extending from the heart North and East.

Politics: 


Lagos State has a tripartite power structure (executive, legislative,and judicial). The Lagos State Governor (executive, currently Babajide Sanwo-Olu) is elected directly by the people to serve a single 4 year term. The legislature of Lagos is comprised of 40 congress members elected by the citizens of the states districts.

The judicial branch of Lagos is divided into a magistrates court and a supreme court. Within these two divisions each state has a series of commercial, criminal, family, civil, and land courts that specialize in these topics, but every sub branch reports to an appointed Hon. Chief Judge.

LEARNING FROM MAKOKO, Lagos &#38;amp; Chicago

“The Venice of Africa”, is an informal settlement rising out of the Lagos Lagoon at the heart of Lagos, Nigeria. This hyper-dense neighborhood is an intricate network of markets, homes,  and industry where nearly 200,000 people spend most of their lives. The neighborhood is not formally recognized by the city of Lagos, and has recently undergone strict reclamation measures orchestrated by the local government. The population primarily works in the logging industry that Nigeria has capitalized on with its abundance of tropical forests. This industry is often illegal as people haul logs from government owned land down the Lagoon to shore-side saw mills from which most of the informal homes are constructed.


Makoko is an extremely populous neighborhood in the city only topped by downtown’s Central neighborhood, and the western neighborhood of Ajengule. 2017 estimates put the density at 64,000- 140,000 people/km2, but due to the city’s rapid population growth there could be as many as 150,000 people/km2. The homes are very modest and most importantly serve many different functions. The home in Makoko can be a place to sleep just as easily as it is where fishers fix their nets, people sell their catch or other market goods, or carpenters make build boats for the constant stream of people moving to the neighborhood.Chicago at nearly 180 degrees is a well developed hyper planned neighborhood trapped in the grid iron of the Midwest. The city, although one of the most dense in the US, pales in comparison to the density of Makoko. With a total population of 2.7 million and an average density of barely 4,600 people/km2, the city struggles to provide adequate affordable public transit to its residents. The city experiences some of the highest property values in the country preventing the possibility of home ownership, and creating a housing shortage.  The city  is mostly made-up of historic low-rise neighborhoods rarely reaching densities above 50,000 people/km2. These communities are planned and follow strict principles of 20th century modernism that homogenize huge swaths of the city.


I want to see what we can learn from Makoko’s amorphous, heterogeneous, and flexible programs; then I want to apply those principles to create a new neighborhood typology in the city of Chicago.

Politics: 


The city of Luanda is one of 18 provinces that compose the country of Angola. The province is composed of 9 municipalities, 5 of those composing the urban area of Luanda. The province is govened by a state appointed governor who holds most of the political power (along with the rest of Angola’s executive branch). Of the govenment funded projects in Angola, roughly a third of the country’s money is put into projects in Luanda. In recent years, high prioritization has been placed on the construction of new social housing projects in the city as a means to control the growth of slums, which are described by the governement as hotbeds for disease and crime.

Rangel Marketplex, Luanda, Angola&#38;nbsp;


The Rangel Marketplex builds onto the already diverse programmatic variety that defines the Rangel neighborhood in Luanda. Anchored by the largest market in the city, the neighborhood is known for its vibrant retail scene as well as all-around culture. However the neighborhood is also stricken with poverty, lacks adequate green space, and is home to the highest density of individuals in the city. 

The Rangel Marketplex is designed on the site of the existing market to supplement an already thriving market and provide additional amenities to the neighborhood. Without displacing any existing housing, the building builds skywards above the market. Five stories up are two public greens dimensioned to be the size of a soccer field. These fields can support sporting events, concerts, community festivals, and well as market overflow. Surround the fields are additional recreational facilities and stadium-like seating. Five towers connected by a sky bridge, are arranged around these two fields. Ranging from 10 to 22 stories high, hach tower sectionally starts with retail on the ground floor, then office space, ending with residential units at the top. 

The building is also very cognizant of the existing demographic of the neighborhood and also aware of its rapidly changing face. In reaction to the predominantly informal nature of the housing in the neighborhood, the building takes on similar build-as-you-need qualities, where each residential portion of the towers are only built with built in the core and slabs in place. Each residence is then completed by each resident under their own time and means. Over time the residents complete the building as they build out their homes. Additionally, some parts of the building are able to change function over time, parking can become market, residential space can become commercial or religious/educational institutions, etc.&#38;nbsp;

Politics: 

Paris is a semi-presidential democratic republic with a strong democratic tradition and history. The city of Paris is governed as a commune, or a single political unit. It is governed by an elected mayor and council, similar to all other French commune. The council of Paris is elected every six years by all citizens. The suburbs of Paris have their own 1,200 communes. The city of paris combined with the suburbs form what is refered to as the Île-de-France region. Because of the seperation of Paris and the surrounding communes, political coordination is difficult between the city and its suburbs.

Hybrid Nodes, Paris


Paris is known for having the highest built density in Europe,
as well as one of the best distributions of services. Much of its success is
due to the redesign and construction of the city by Baron Georges-Eugene Haussman
starting in the 1850s. The building typology implemented by Haussmann was based
around flexibility, a diversity of programs and functions, and a system of
public spaces and utilities. 


While the Haussmann system has proven successful for almost
two centuries, much of the development in the city is based around new
typologies. In addition to development in the city, the metro area has
continued to expand with sprawling suburbs characterized by much lower density
levels. Many corporate offices are located in the suburbs because of ample real
estate, resulting in reverse commuting by city residents. While many offices
desire to return to the urban core of Paris, there are not suitable conditions
for most of them.


Recently, there have been calls to revise the city in order
to have a more even distribution of urban conditions, termed the “15 minute
city.” The 15 minute city calls for dwelling, working, services, health,
education, and leisure in close proximity to each other in all portions of the
city. Simply put, the goal is to have as many things as possible in the same space.
A redefined Haussmann typology has the potential to meet the cities needs as it
attempts to define its “15 minute city” and develop a network of polycentric dense
nodes. Paris does not have a CBD, nor does it have a desire to acquire one. A distribution
of smaller centers would allow for greater integration into the existing city
fabric, and a much higher level of mixity of varying programs. 
 
Distributed throughout the city, these dense nodes can meet
the need for offices and research facilities within the city, while integrating
with additional housing and shared communal program. This proposal retains the
historic street front of Haussmann period construction, while allowing for
denser and more vertical construction on the interior of the block. The use of
more vertical construction with horizontal connection creates opportunity for
larger voids of exterior program.

SUPERBLOCK IDYLL, Barcelona

The concept of Superblock Idyll is about shaping the new walking lifestyle from the ground to the roof of Superblock. 

Superblock districts is pretty famous in Barcelona. Most of Superblock buildings locate in the inner core of the city. They are huge complexes with common areas, commercial areas, public housing, apartments, hotels, offices, etc. 
 

Superblock buildings are also famous of being set out in a rigid and efficient urban grid. This kind of urban grid can be beneficial for the transportation system. However, it also create an environment that is not friendly for humans to wonder around and interact with each other. It results in a rigid transition from public space to private space in Superblock districts. Inside the Superblock building, the circulation is also rigid, simple, and direct which eliminates the variety of life.


Therefore, the proposal of Superblock Idyll is trying to mitigate these problems. It tries to open the inner courtyard of Superblock to the outside with a running ramp in order to create a smoother transition from public space to semi-public space to private space.


What’s more, inspired by the roof design of Casa Mila, The proposal is trying to design a new level of interactive space for residents in the Superblock districts.

Politics: 


Monaco is a principality governed under a form of constitutional monarchy, with the Sovereign Prince of Monaco as head of state. The prince shares his veto power with the unicameral National Council. The 24 members of the National Council are elected for five-year terms; 16 are chosen through a majority electoral system and 8 by proportional

representation. There is no geographical distinction between the State and City of Monaco, although the responsibilities of the government (state-level) and of the municipality (city-level) are different.

CITY CENTER: PORTIER COVE, Monaco


City Center: Portier Cove is a proposal that looks to expand upon the historic city center typology found across Europe. The site of the proposal is an ongoing land reclamation project happening off the coast between the Monte-Carlo and Larvotto districts of Monaco. The City Center: Portier Cove proposal is a response to the planned construction on the site, which does not adequately respond to the housing crisis in Monaco. With land scarcity and the most expensive housing market in the world, reimagining the planned low-density villas with a more practical high-density solution offers some much-needed relief to the Monaco housing crisis. 

Pulling from the historic city centers across Europe and within Monaco itself, the proposal takes advantage of a proven technique for creating high-density while also retaining the human scale and livability. Creating a mixed-use space modeled after the historic city centers, the proposal creates a pedestrian-only zone with commercial on the first floor and residential above. The pedestrian-only zone allows the commercial spaces to flow into the street creating markets, gathering areas, and patios. The residential space above densifies the area at a rate and scale that creates neighborhood character and provides customers for the commercial spaces below.

In the reimagining of the typology, additional plazas and breezeways were carved from the buildings allowing further walkability, opportunities for gathering, and more light and air to enter the interior plazas. The proposal also minimizes obstructing the view to the sea by stepping the buildings allowing for visibility while still maintaining high-density. The stepped roofs also create opportunities for roof decks and greenspace.

Rich dense urban fabrics are composed of many
interconnected streets forming a grid with blocks of mixed program within.
Primary and secondary axes exist and form naturally, with the intersections of
the grid often creating&#38;nbsp; rich spaces of
social and commercial activity and interaction. Circulation within the grid is
dynamic and also funnels activity to these arteries, provide ample opportunity
for chance social interaction and activity which further enlivens the space.


Using this inspiration, VERTICAL BLOCK CITY brings this
fabric and system of circulation within a single development. Composed of
multiple cores, a grid-like intertwining and interconnected system of
circulation paths provide the main access to different points of the building.
These alternating paths to various points of the building concentrate
circulation within them which creates a dense zone to encourage social contact
and provide areas for occupants to both see out and be seen.

The administrative body of Karachi is the Government of Karachi. BLENDING SPACES

, Karachi

Karachi thrives on activity, interaction, and commerce. Its a place where a symbiotic relationship is found between different types of residence, commercial space, amenities. In a 15 min walking distance one can easily find all resources required to survive. However, it is a victim of disparity cause by income levels.


This design is an attempt to bring communities together by responding to their individual lifestyles and values. Therefore to foster a symbiosis betweem the social classes. There is an opportunity to celebrate  the strength of both communities. 

The dwelling deals with interaction using two elements. Firstly, the feature external stair is an upward spiral of terraces and retail that pulls the street from the ground floor to the floors above. The street trees continue in planters on the terraces, providing access to green spaces from all floors in the building. Secondly, the creation of “blended space” which comprises of retail, workshops (tailor, cobbler etc), greenhouses and courts. This is an opportunity for people to come together and promote exchange between the communities.

Formerly called Edo, its history can be traced back to a small fishing village that became fortified in the 12th century. Politics: 


Tokyo’s political, governmental structure is unique in Japan. Subdivided into 23 “special central wards” since 1943, each ward has its own elected leader and council. However, they remain under the jurisdiction of Tokyo Metropolitan Government, which is also responsible for some of the urban infrastructural systems and municipal functions such as sewage and fire-fighting. The political center of Tokyo rests in Chiyoda Ward, the least populated part, despite its location at the “heart of former Tokyo City”. In the three central wards (Chiyoda, Chūō and Minato) population fluctuates heavily with business hours as they house the government, the Emperor, as well as larger Japanese corporations.

Crossing the Isbek Canal the project proposal intensifies the existing street bridge by providing a multi-layered programmatic approach combined with residential spaces. The new bridge connects not only horizontally the two adjacent quarters of Hamburg, it is at the same time a vertical link from elevated urban green space to boat access in the canal itself.&#38;nbsp;
The main frame provides the structure that program intersects with. It is placed over the old bridge and thus effectively becomes the bridge itself. Larger masses adhering to the frame structure provide the more static programmatic moves, wheras smaller units can be added over time. Circulation through the space is defined by a web of ramps stitching the separate units together. The new Hoheluftbruecke provides direct access to the metro station. Program is varied to enable a healthy mixture.
While the bridge extents vertically, the frame design concept allows for views through it. Furthermore the design increses interaction with the water itself.
