CILIWUVNG TOWER | Jakarta, Indonesia

In our research on Jakarta this semester, we realized that it is a city with a very significant gap between the rich and the poor. There is a great diversity in terms of housing types, public facilities and urban fabric. Along the Ciliwung River, there is a large number of slum areas with small houses, underdeveloped businesses, and a severe lack of public transportation. Our design site is located in a slum area along the Ciliwung Rivery, and we are planning the renewal of the existing bridges and streets, the redevelopment of the commercial streets to help facilitate public transportation, and the design of a mixed-use commercial and residential building.

The first floor of our building is a commercial, leisure and entertainment space with a shopping mall, pedestrian street, restaurant, café and courtyard, which will become a gathering center for people after the main road is cleared and the commercial strip along the street is completed. Above the second floor is a residential building, and we design four households as one floor. In our study, balcony is very important in the life of Jakarta citizens. We wanted to have as little impact as possible on the lifestyle of the residents, so the size of the dwellings follows the original local dwellings, while each floor is equipped with a large common balcony.

We hope to help improve the quality of life of the local residents while increasing housing.
