Espacio Para Crecer, Buenos Aires

Espacio Para Crecer (or space to grow) is a speculative project sited in the Don Orione neighborhood. In the 1950’s a housing development commissioned by then-president Juan Domingo Perón was constructed on the site as part of a campaign promise he made to build a house for every Argentinian.

This project builds on the layout of the housing developments of this area as well as taking inspiration from the additions the residents of Don Orione have added on to the previously constructed government housing in the area to envision a more flexible style of housing block. The goal is to construct housing which has the ability to grow and densify as the neighborhood densifies.

In this project a living core is built during initial stage of construction with a steel frame that extends beyond the living core. As resident’s needs change and families grow, occupants have the ability to extend their house. This allows for the local aesthetic styles to be incorporated into the building, the residents to have a sense of ownership over the space, and for informal businesses to be established.
With the right framework there should be a space for the neighborhood of Don Orione to grow.
