Severe impacts of the apartheid regime have shaped the demographics of Johannesburg into many
racially segregated neighborhoods. Having ample job opportunties today has continued the growth of
high density populaitons within the urban confines. Meanwhile, informal settlements on the cities
peripheries have contniued to grow over the past decade. In the South Western Townships named
SOWETO, these once “shanty towns” have begun transforming into sprawling high dense suburban
communties.

METRO STATION MID-RISE JUNCTION, Johannesburg, South Africa
Growing suburban developments in peripheral townships of Johannesburg, South Africa have taken off at an alarming rate in recent years. This type of growth continues to pay homage towards segregating people from city limits in response to apartheid regime. Challenging such intense historic dilemmas along with current sprawling urbanization trends calls for an [sub]urban intervention which cannot be ignored; Metro Station mid-rise modular towers.
Situated around the peripheral boundary of the metro railway, Metro Station mid-rise towers span from Soweto Township into downtown Johannesburg, Gutantag, South Africa. Combating trends of communities that are increasingly expanding outward, creating new modular structures with building parcels vertically above the metro allows convenient access back into downtown.
