The political status of Taipei and Taiwan as a whole is challenging. There are two key political parties in Taiwan, the kuomintang and the democratic progressive party. The kuomintang favor closer ties to mainland China and the democratic progressive party favors Taiwanese independence.

Top left: THE XINYI DISTRICT, COMMONLY REFERRED TO AS THE MANHATTAN OF TAIPE,I UTILIZES THE TOWER TYPOLOGY TO ACHIEVE DENSITY. THE AGORA GARDEN TOWER, PICTURED UNDER CONSTRUCTION, IS REPORTEDLY THE MOST EXPENSIVE REAL ESTATE IN TAIPEI. EACH FLOOR ROTATES 4.5 DEGREES. THE BUILDING IS DESIGNED BY VINCENT CALLEBAUT ARCHITECTURES.

Top right: NEWER DEVELOPMENTS OF THE CITY ARE EMBRACING DENSITY THROUGH THE DEVELOPMENT OF TOWERS. IMAGE TWO IS FROM ALLEY 77, LANE 180, SECTION 6, MINQUAN EAST ROAD TAIPEI CITY. THE NEIHU DISTRICT APPEARS TO BE AUTOMOBILE CENTRIC DUE TO THE AMOUNT OF ROADWAYS AND THE LACK OF RAIL TRANSPORTATION.

Lower left: XIMENDING, LOCATED IN THE WANHAU DISTRICT, IS A UNIQUE URBAN TYPOLOGY DUE TO THE INTEGRATION OF RESIDENTIAL AND COMMERCIAL. POPULAR BRANDS ARE TANGLED WITH LOCAL MERCHANTS. LOCAL VENDORS ALSO PROVIDE FOOD OPTIONS.

Lower right: THE SHIDA NIGHT MARKET, LOCATED IN THE DA’AN DISTRICT, IS A UNIQUE BLEND OF SMALL RESTAURANTS AND SHOPS. RESIDENTIAL UNITS ARE LOCATED ON THE FLOORS ABOVE. GIVEN THE WIDTH OF THE STREETS AND THE HEIGHT OF THE BUILDINGS, USUALLY THREE TO FOUR STORIES, THE ENVIRONMENT IS OF THE HUMAN SCALE

Techno-Structural

Digital technology is altering our patterns of consumption which, in turn, impact the built environment. As mentioned by Andreesson Horowitz partner Marc Andreesson, software is consuming the world. This simple quotation illustrates the impact of software on our day to day lives.

As architects, how might we leverage the shift in consumption patterns to produce new spatial typologies as well as address the strengths, weaknesses, threats and opportunities they present to the built environment? Since the rise of the automobile and the subsequent planning, we have not encountered changes in how we have designed and planned. Now, technology impacts our built environment in a similar fashion Techno-structural attempts to inject entrepreneurial spirit into the Neihu District of Taipei, Taiwan.

Neihu is one of the least dense districts in the city and often features single use zone. This is the
sprawl of Taiwan. The project is comprised of a warehouse space designed around modes of new mobility, a fabrication space for local retailers, a ghost kitchen, micro retail and restaurant space, and live work units. The central core is defined by these elements as a greenway wraps the structure to the roof. The roof features a shaded park area for all to enjoy.
